Jan. 25, 2013
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State wrestling lost a narrow dual to No. 23 Northwestern, 18-15, on Friday night at Jenison Field House. The Spartans (4-8, 0-4 Big Ten) took four matches from the Wildcats and sophomore Nick McDiarmid took down No. 16 Alex Polizzi, 3-2, at 197 pounds.
"We didn't give up any bonus points and we were in virtually every match," head coach Tom Minkel said. "As a team, we are growing, getting better and learning as we go. We're wrestling some of the best kids in the country and we are going toe to toe with them."
The dual got started at 125 pounds and Brenan Lyon lost a narrow 2-1 decision to No. 19 Dominick Malone of Northwestern. Lyon and Malone both traded escapes in the second and third periods but 1:25 of ride time in favor of Malone proved to be the difference.
The Wildcats won matches at 133 and 141 before Roger Wildmo got MSU on the board with a 4-3 decision over Dylan Marriott at 149 pounds.
Northwestern built up an 18-3 lead before No. 18 John Rizqallah won a 3-0 decision over Jacob Berkowitz at 184 pounds. Rizqallah used a reversal in the third period and added ride time to shutout Berkowitz and win his 11th dual match of the season.
Sophomore Nick McDiarmid won his first dual match of the season and defeated a ranked wrestler for the first time as well, defeating No. 16 Alex Polizzi 3-2. Both wrestlers were tied 2-2 late in the match but McDiarmid maneuvered an escape in the third to seal the decision.
The Wildcats elected to forfeit the heavyweight division, bringing the final score to 18-15.
The Spartans are back in action at Ohio on Sunday, Jan. 27 at 2 p.m.
