Wrestling Drops Hard-Fought Dual to No. 6 Ohio State, 24-13
Feb. 5, 2012
EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State wrestling team lost a hard-fought dual to No. 6 Ohio State, 24-13, on Senior Day at Jenison Field House Sunday afternoon. The Spartans won four matches in the dual and had the lead late with only two weight classes to go, but lost in the final matches. Seniors Anthony Jones Jr. (157) and Curran Jacobs (174) each recorded decisions for Michigan State. "That was the best we've wrestled all year, it just got away from us at the end," said Michigan State head coach Tom Minkel. "I think we can build on this. Ohio State is one of the best teams in the country - that's a really good squad. I think our guys should come out of this with some confidence, knowing that if we wrestle like this, if we go hard every match, we can do some good things." Brian Gibbs took on Jarod Boone of Ohio State at 141 pounds to kick off the dual. Gibbs pinned Boone in the first period at 2:44 and propelled the Spartans (3-9, 1-7 Big Ten) to an early 6-0 lead. It was Gibbs's first career dual match fall. At 149 pounds, Dan Osterman lost a close 4-2 decision to No. 14 Cam Tessari of Ohio State (11-3, 5-3). Both wrestlers were tied after three periods and Tessari came away with the deciding takedown in sudden victory overtime at 0:35. No. 12 Anthony Jones Jr. won an exciting 5-4 decision over No. 20 Josh Demas of Ohio State at 157 pounds. Jones fell behind late in the third period 4-3 after giving up an escape to Demas, but responded with a takedown of his own. With only 15 seconds on the clock Jones recorded the deciding takedown in his last match at Jenison Field House.
"It was high intensity," Jones said of his match against Demas. "We both know each other, and we both wrestle similar styles. I knew in the third period he was going to be on his defense, and I just had to score. And that's what I ended up doing." "It was huge," said Minkel regarding Jones' victory. "That was a pressure situation: time's running out, he's wrestling another ranked guy, and he has to get a takedown. He did a good job - he got him up in the air, got him back in, and had a nice finish. And then he kept him from getting away with 15 seconds left, so that was a big-time response to a difficult situation. I think that demonstrates Anthony's maturity and experience." In the 165-pound match, Nick Proctor lost a 6-3 decision to Derek Garcia of OSU. Both wrestlers were tied at two heading into the third period but Garcia scored a takedown, an escape and added riding time to win the decision. Jacobs, ranked 16th in the nation, defeated Joe Grandiminico of Ohio State, 6-1, at 174 pounds. Jacobs didn't give up a takedown and scored a reversal and three near-fall points early in the second period to control the match. Jacobs added riding time for the 6-1 decision and gave the Spartans a 12-6 lead at intermission. "It was tough," said Jacobs of handling the emotion of Senior Day. "It's going to be the last time competing for the Spartans in East Lansing. It was a special moment, and I couldn't have ended it on a better note." "Curran always gives you everything every match," said Minkel. "That kid just wrestles all out. You always know - no matter what happens - you're getting his best." Senior Ian Hinton lost to No. 10 C.J. Magrum of OSU at 184 pounds, 3-1 in sudden victory. Each wrestler scored an escape in regulation and Magrum came away with the sudden victory takedown with only nine seconds left in the overtime period. At 197 pounds, redshirt freshman Nick McDiarmid lost to Andrew Campolattano of Ohio State, 10-3. Steve Andrus scored an 8-3 decision over No. 18 Peter Capone in the heavyweight division. Andrus was aggressive throughout the match and recorded three takedowns over Capone. He also had an escape and added 1:40 of ride time, putting MSU ahead, 15-12. Senior Eric Olanowski took on No. 16 Johnni Dijulius of Ohio State at 125 pounds. Olanowski fell behind early in the match and was disqualified in the third period for unsportsmanlike conduct. Michigan State was also deducted two points from the team score. In the final match of the dual, Brandon Fifield was pinned by No. 3 Logan Stieber of Ohio State in 1:36, giving the Buckeyes the 24-13 win. Michigan State honored its 2012 senior class - David Cheza, Tyler Dickenson, Jacobs, Jones, Hinton, and Olanowksi - in a ceremony before the dual. "This senior class is a just a great group of young men," said Minkel. "I'm really proud of them." The Spartans return to action Friday, Feb. 10 to take on Edinboro in Edinboro, Pa.
