No. 20 Edinboro Edges Spartan Wrestling, 18-15

EDINBORO, Pa. - No. 20 Edinboro defeated the Spartan wrestling team, 18-15, Friday night at McComb Field House. With the dual tied at 15, Edinboro's Ernest James recorded a takedown against Mike McClure at heavyweight with just 15 seconds remaining to secure the 3-1 win and the dual victory, 18-15. For the second straight dual, the Spartans (3-10) led 15-12 with only two matches remaining, but lost decisions in the 197-pound and heavyweight classes. Brenan Lyon began the night with a 9-7 win over Kory Mines at 125 pounds, giving MSU a quick 3-0 lead. The Fighting Scots (9-2) rallied to win three straight matches to take a 12-3 advantage. No. 6 A.J. Schopp started the run with a fall over Terry Turner in 1:53 at 133 pounds, then 15th-ranked Mitchell Port tallied a 6-1 decision over Brian Gibbs at 141. Dan Osterman lost a tough 4-2 decision in sudden victory overtime to No. 5 Dave Hobat in the 149-pound matchup. No. 10 Anthony Jones halted Edinboro's momentum with a 6-3 win against Casey Fuller at 157 pounds, which began a string of four consecutive wins for Michigan State. After sitting out Senior Day last Sunday against Ohio State with an injury, David Cheza re-entered the lineup at 165 and topped Jesse Swink, 7-2. No. 16 Curran Jacobs won his team-leading 21st match of the season with a 7-3 triumph at 174 pounds over Chris Hrunka, tying the dual score at 12. The Spartans took a 15-12 lead as Ian Hinton edged Vic Avery, 6-5, at 184 pounds. But the Fighting Scots came back to take the last two matches and claim the dual. Second-ranked and undefeated Chris Honeycutt beat Nick McDiarmid, 6-2, at 197 pounds, before the decisive match at heavyweight.
After a scoreless first period, James took a 1-0 lead with an early escape in the second; however, McClure added his own escape to begin the third. With time winding down in the final period, James recorded the match-winning takedown with 15 seconds to win 3-1. The Spartans return to action for the Edinboro Open all day Saturday.
