EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State wrestling fell at home to No. 19 Michigan on Sunday afternoon, 24-15. The dual got started at 184 pounds and the Spartans (4-12, 0-8) led 12-3 after junior Brenan Lyon won by fall over No. 15 Sean Boyle of Michigan at 125 pounds. However, Michigan won three of the final four matches and took the dual, 24-15.
Lyon, a native of Ithaca, Mich., took down his first ranked wrestler of the season and ignited the Jenison crowd with a pin over Boyle in 2:01. After a scramble mid-way though the first period, Lyon had the 15th-ranked Boyle on his back and was able to finish the fall, giving MSU a 12-3 lead.
"Brenan has matured so much in the last couple months," Minkel said. "He has really improved his technical skills and is night and day from where he was. He showed that today and has come around with some pretty big wins for us."
No. 18 John Rizqallah defeated Chris Heald of Michigan, 6-0 in the opening match. The Wolverines then evened the score at 197, setting up the match between ranked wrestlers at heavyweight.
No. 7 Michael McClure scored a late takedown in the second period over No. 19 Ben Apland and led 3-0 after the first two periods. McClure gave up an escape in the third but finished with another takedown, giving him a 5-1 decision.
Michigan won a major decision at 133 pounds, a decision at 141 and a fall at 149, giving them a 16-12 lead.
Ryan Watts defeated Mike Carpenter of Michigan at 157 pounds, 3-1. And Michigan went on to take the last two matches and the dual.
