MSU Wrestling loses to No. 22 Iowa State, 30-10

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State wrestling fell to No. 22 Iowa State at Jenison Field House on Friday night, 30-10. The Spartans couldn't overcome an early 12-0 deficit but took three matches; winning at 149 pounds, 157 pounds and heavyweight.
"That is a darn good team," head coach Tom Minkel said. "We really had to earn everything we got, every point in every match."
The dual got started at 125 pounds and MSU dropped three straight major decisions to the Clyclones, falling behind 12-0.
Junior Dan Osterman won a 6-2 decision over Max Mayfield of Iowa State at 149 pounds. Osterman scored an early takedown in the first and added another in the second period to seal the win.
Sophomore Ryan Watts won a narrow 2-1 decision at 157 pounds over Logan Molina. Each wrestler traded escapes in the second and third periods but 1:08 of ride time in favor of Watts gave him the decision. Watts accumulated the majority if his ride time in the second period.
ISU lengthened its lead with three consecutive major decisions and a fall at 197 pounds, giving them a 30-6 lead with just one match remaining.
No. 7 Michael McClure dominated Matt Gibson of Iowa State, winning a 9-1 major decision. McClure scored three takedowns throughout the match and added 2:37 of ride time.
MSU closes out its dual season on Friday, Feb. 22 against Central Michigan at Jenison Field House. The Spartans will recognize the seniors and the match will start at 7 p.m.
