NCAA Championships Update: Session One

DES MOINES, Iowa - The NCAA Championships kicked off Thursday afternoon at the Wells Fargo Arena with first-round matches. No. 8 seed Michael McClure and senior Dan Osterman each recorded victories for MSU, while Ryan Watts and John Rizqallah each dropped their first matches.
Osterman had a rematch with Donnie Corby of Central Michigan in the first round, Corby and Osterman split this season, each beating each other once. It was another tightly contested match, and it was tied 1-1 after regulation. Osterman scored a takedown with just four seconds left in overtime, earning a 3-1 sudden victory decision.
Osterman will face No. 4 seed Cole VonOhlen of Air Force in the second round.
No. 8 McClure took down Riley Shaw of Cleveland State in the first round, 6-1. McClure notched a takedown in the second period, and another in the third, along with riding time to seal the victory.
He will face No. 9 seed Zac Thomusseit of Pittsburgh in the second round.
Sophomore Ryan Watts, making his first appearance at NCAAs, dropped a 9-1 major decision to No. 6 seed Alex Dieringer. In the consolation bracket, Watts will face No. 11 seed Walter Peppelman of Harvard.
At 184 pounds, John Rizqallah dropped a 5-2 decision to Mason Bailey of Navy. He will face Ty Vinson of Oregon State in the consolation round.
