EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State wrestling traveled to Ypsilanti, Mich., for the Eastern Michigan Open on Saturday, Nov. 3. The Spartans placed 18 wrestlers, including 16 top-five finishes in their first competition of the 2012-13 season.
In his first collegiate tournament, freshman Hermilo Esquivel won all five of his matches, including his last against fellow Spartan and freshman Garth Yenter to claim first place at 125 pounds in the freshman/sophomore division. Esquivel defeated Yenter with a pin in 2:58.
At 133 pounds in the freshman/sophomore division, sophomore Terry Turner and freshman Christian Olanowski both won their first three matches before falling and forcing a faceoff in their fifth and final match of the tournament. Olanowski forfeited the third place spot to Turner, securing the fourth place spot for hisself.
After dropping his first match, sophomore Brandon Fifield won his next five matches before falling in his sixth to earn sixth place at 141 pounds in the freshman/sophomore division.
Freshman Matt Pasqualini took fifth place spot at 157 pounds in the freshman/sophomore division.
With a bye for his first match, and three consecutive wins to follow, freshman Jordan Wohlfert earned the second place spot after falling in the 174 pounds title match, 1-0.
At 285 pounds, freshman Chris Nash won five matches consecutively to take first place.
Sophomore Josh Heinzer took fifth place at 125 pounds in the open division.
In the open division, senior Dan Osterman earned third place at 149 pounds with a bye in his first match and three wins in his next four matches.
Ryan Watts went 2-2 at 157 pounds to claim the fourth place spot in the open division.
No. 16 Michael McClure went 4-0 at heavyweight and took first place after defeating Andrew Tumlin of Findlay, 10-4.
The Spartans return to action to host the MSU Open on Sunday, Nov. 11 at Jenison Field House.
