EAST LANSING, Mich.- The Michigan State wrestling program hosted the MSU Open all day Saturday at Jenison Field House. The event featured more than 600 wrestlers and over 29 schools were represented from around the country. Wrestlers competed in both a freshman/sophomore division and an open division.

The Spartans had 16 wrestlers place in the top six on the day, including individual titles from David Cheza in the 157-pound open division and Nick Proctor in the 165-pound freshman/sophomore division.

"Every single guy wrestled very, very hard," MSU head coach Tom Minkel said. "I am enormously proud of this group. Every guy gave everything they had. We had as good a tournament that we have had here and the field was tougher this year than it ever has been."

The depth of the Spartan wrestling team was on display at the MSU Open. Michigan State placed wrestlers in nine different weight classes and 16 placed in the top-six of the tournament in either the open or the freshman/sophomore division.

"We have really good depth, and really good commitment from a lot of guys," Minkel said. "When half of your team places in a tournament like this, you are on the right track.

David Cheza was the top finisher in the open division, winning an individual title in the 157-pound bracket. The senior opened up the tournament with a fall against Tyler Loethen of Northern Illinois in 2:26, then recorded an 8-1 decision over Patrick Robinson of Purdue. In the quarterfinals Cheza defeated Dylan Marriott of Northwestern 8-1, and then beat Jake O'Hara of Columbia, 6-1 in the semifinals. In the championship match he notched a 5-2 decision over Elias Larson of Trine University.

"He did not give up a takedown the whole tournament," Minkel said of Cheza. "Cheza is certainly on track and he is very focused and committed to winning a national title and this was a good step in that direction."

Junior Eric Olanowski placed fourth in the open division at 125 pounds, finishing with a 2-2 record. Olanowski fell to Joe Roth of Central Michigan in the third-place match, 9-4.

Sophomore Brenan Lyon placed sixth at 125 pounds and responded after losing his first match with three straight pins. Lyon finished the day 4-2.
