Complete ACC-Big Ten Clash Results CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Michigan State wrestling team finished the ACC-Big Ten Clash with a 2-1 record to begin dual-match play on Saturday, Nov. 15. The Spartans (2-1) defeated North Carolina, 18-12, and North Carolina State, 23-13, but lost the third match of the Clash to No. 21 Virginia, 23-15. MSU, No. 9 Illinois and No.12 Wisconsin represented the Big Ten well, winning eight of its nine matches on the day. The Big Ten outscored the ACC in total points, 233-109. No. 3 Franklin Gomez (133 pounds) and redshirt freshman Eric Olanowski (125) both finished the Clash with an undefeated 3-0 mark, while four other Spartans finished the day at 2-1. Gomez improved his unblemished record to 7-0 on the season. In the first dual against UNC, Olanowski and Gomez won back-to-back matches to give the Spartans an early 6-0 lead. The Tar Heels took two of the next three, moving the score to a 9-9 tie. John Murphy (174), Ian Hinton (184) and Tyler Dickenson (197) then put together three-straight wins, giving MSU an 18-9 lead. The Spartans held on to the lead, winning the first dual of the day, 18-12. Olanowski, Gomez and Joel Trombly (141) all won their matches to open up the dual against NC State, giving MSU an early 10-0 lead. The Spartans would not give that lead up, as they won four of the next seven matches to defeat the Wolfpack, 23-13. No. 14 Rex Kendle rebounded from an early loss with a 13-0 major decision victory to help the Green and White hang on to its lead.
Back-to-back wins for the Spartans opened up the third match of the day as well, but this time an early 9-0 lead wasn't enough to hold off No. 21 Virginia. The Cavaliers won six of the next eight matches to build up to a 23-15 victory. MSU returns to action after a week off from competition to take part in the Penn State Open on Sunday, Nov. 30.
