Michigan State Falls to Eastern Michigan, 20-16
Nov. 18, 2011
EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State wrestling team lost to Eastern Michigan in its first dual of the season, 20-16, Friday at IM West. The Spartans managed wins in the final three weight classes but it was not enough to close the gap.
"We dug ourselves a pretty big hole," head coach Tom Minkel said. "We are a work in progress. We certainly have to learn from this and improve, and I'm pretty confident that we will. The fact that we have a fairly mature team, we will be all right."
In the opening match of the night at 125 pounds junior Eric Olanowski was pinned by Jared Germaine of Eastern Michigan in 6:35. Germaine avenged a 5-4 loss to Olanowski last season and the Eagles jumped out to a 6-0 lead.
Freshman Brandon Fifield lost a major decision to Andrew Novak of Eastern Michigan, 10-2, at 133. Novak added 4:27 of riding time in the third period to secure the major decision.
In the 141-pound matchup Corey Phillips of EMU received a major decision for his 13-3 win over freshman Brian Gibbs.
At 149 pounds, No. 20 Dan Osterman got the Spartans on the board with a major decision of his own, a 13-5 victory over Jaylyn Bohl of Eastern Michigan. Osterman scored two takedowns and a near-fall in the first period and added two more takedowns in the second period. A reversal and riding time in the third period wrapped up the victory, cutting the Eagles lead to 12-4.
No. 15 David Cheza lost a tough 3-2 decision to Aaron Sulzer of Eastern Michigan at 157 pounds. Sulzer scored a takedown with only 17 seconds remaining in the match to take a 3-1 lead, Cheza had 1:06 of riding time but it wasn't enough.
Michigan State received a 5-3 decision by Anthony Jones Jr. over Lester France of Eastern Michigan in the 165-pound class. Two takedowns by Jones in the first period propelled him to the win.
Curran Jacobs fell to Phillip Joseph of EMU, 2-1, at 174 pounds. Neither wrestler recorded a takedown the entire match, as a stalling call on Jacobs and a third period escape by Joseph proved to be the difference.
At 184 pounds, Ian Hinton beat Mike Curby of EMU with a 8-4 decision. Hinton led the whole match and added a late takedown with only three seconds remaining to notch the victory, trimming the lead to 20-10.
No. 16 Tyler Dickenson received a 5-2 decision over Nick Whittenburg of Eastern Michigan at 197-pounds.
Michael McClure, ranked No. 14 in the country, closed out the dual with a 6-1 victory over Wes Schroeder of EMU; however, it was not enough for the Spartans, as they lost by a final of 20-16.
Michigan State has two weeks off before heading to Pennsylvania on Dec. 3 to take on both Lock Haven and Bucknell.
