No. 20 Spartan Wrestling Defeats No. 18 Central Michigan, 18-16
Nov. 28, 2001
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Michigan State All-American Chris Williams (Sr., Fowlerville, Mich.) defeated Jason Borelli, 5-2, in the final match at 125 pounds to propel No. 20 MSU to an 18-16 win over No. 18 Central Michigan Wednesday night (Nov. 28) at Rose Arena. The dual, the first meet of the season for both schools, went back and forth all night until MSU finally pulled out in the end. The final match, at 125, was a rematch of the semifinals in the MSU Open. Borelli beat Williams in East Lansing, 5-2, and was named the most outstanding wrestler of the tournament. Williams reversed the score in Mount Pleasant however, as he notched all five points in the final period. "This team is all about figuring a way to win, and they did the job tonight," said MSU head coach Tom Minkel. "I'm extremely proud of how they wrestled in a very hostile environment." The match began at 133 pounds. Jordan Webster, a returning national qualifier and MAC favorite, defeated Ryan L'Amoreaux (So., Clarkston, Mich.), 12-6. It was L'Amoreaux's first defeat of the season, as he now falls to 5-1. At 141, 11th-ranked Jason Mester beat Eric Keith (Fr., Portage, Ind.) 14-7 in a major decision to put the Chippewas up 7-0. MSU's first victory of the match came at 149 pounds as 15th-ranked Karl Nadolsky (Jr., Holland, Mich.) edged 19th-ranked Ty Morgan, 9-7. MSU's Gray Maynard (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.), ranked 11th, recorded the first pin of the match over 15th-ranked David Bolyard at the 3:59 mark, giving the Spartans their first lead at 9-7.
CMU came back to take a 10-9 lead after 19th-ranked Kevin Carr topped Anton Hall (Jr., Ada, Mich.), 7-4, at 165 pounds.
MSU once again took the lead, 12-10, when Nathaniel Mesyn (So., Clinton Twp., Mich) shutout Jeff Pangborn, 5-0, at 174 pounds. At 184, Rashad Evans (Jr., Niagara Falls, N.Y.) extended MSU's advantage to 15-10 after defeating Alex Lammers, 5-3. CMU clipped the lead to two after Brett Faustman held off John Wechter (Jr., Saginaw, Mich.), 7-6, in a hotly contested match at 197 pounds. MSU returns to action Friday, Dec. 7, to take on No. 4 Michigan in Jenison Field House at 7:30 p.m.
