Spartans return to action Saturday to face Northern Illinois at 3 p.m. ET in DeKalb, Ill.
Dec. 7, 2012
MADISON, Wis. - The Michigan State wrestling team fell to Wisconsin, 19-12, Friday night at Wisconsin Field House in the Big Ten opener for both teams. The Spartans (1-2) and Badgers (4-2) split the first eight matches of the dual, but Wisconsin came away with wins at 197 pounds and heavyweight to claim the victory.
In the final match of the dual, No. 14 Connor Medbery upset 10th-ranked Mike McClure of Michigan State at heavyweight, 6-2, handing McClure his first loss of the season. With the Badgers leading 16-12 going into the final weight class, McClure needed at least a major decision to prevent a Spartan defeat, but Medbery held McClure off to secure the dual win for the Badgers.
After a scoreless first period, Medbery escaped early to start the second and then recorded a takedown to go up, 3-0. McClure followed with an escape, but trailed heading into the third, 3-1. McClure, who was 11-0 going into the match, escaped to start the third to trim his deficit to 3-2. Medbery came up with another takedown in the final period, however, and added a point of riding time in the 6-2 decision.
The Spartans won three of the first five matches and led 9-7 at intermission.
Josh Heinzer notched his first dual win as a Spartan with an 11-7 decision over Matt Cavallaris at 125 pounds to start the evening. Wisconsin rallied to claim the next two matches, as Tom Kelliher shut out Brandon Fifield at 133 pounds, 3-0, and ninth-ranked Tyler Graff produced a major decision over Nick Trimble at 141 pounds, 23-9.
Wisconsin came out of the break with back-to-back wins at 165 and 174 to regain the lead, 13-9. Frank Cousins defeated Ryan Watts at 165, 11-5, while Jordan Wohlfert suffered his first dual loss as a Spartan with a 6-5 defeat to Scott Liegel at 174 pounds.
John Rizqallah remained undefeated in duals this season with a 5-0 shutout win over Ben Cox at 184 pounds, cutting the Badger lead to 13-12.
At 197, Jackson Hein beat Nick McDiarmid, 4-0, putting Wisconsin back up four points before Medberry's decision over McClure at heavyweight made the final 19-12 in favor of the Badgers.
The Spartans will have a quick turnaround with a dual at Northern Illinois Saturday at 3 p.m. ET.
