Spartan Wrestling Dominates Northern Illinois, 25-9

DeKALB, Ill. - The Michigan State wrestling team defeated Northern Illinois, 25-9, Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center on the NIU campus. The Spartans claimed seven matches in the dual, including a fall by No. 10 Mike McClure at heavyweight, to improve to 2-2 on the season. The Huskies dropped to 5-2.
MSU won the first three weight classes to take a commanding 9-0 lead, starting with Dan Osterman's 7-5 decision over Rob Jilliard at 149 pounds. David Cheza remained perfect in duals this season at 4-0 with a 5-0 shutout victory against Andrew Morse at 157, while Nick Proctor, an Illinois native making his debut in the lineup this season, recorded a 3-1 decision over Dan Burk at 165 pounds.
Northern Illinois got on the board with Matt Mougin's 5-3 decision over Jordan Wohlfert at 174 pounds, but MSU then rattled off four straight wins to go up 25-3.
At 184 pounds, John Rizqallah improved to 4-0 in dual meets by edging Bryan Loughlin, 3-2.
Luke Jones also made his season debut in the lineup at 197 pounds and responded with a 12-3 major decision over Shawn Scott. It marked Jones' first career dual win.
After losing his first match of the season last night to No. 14 Connor Medbery of Wisconsin, McClure came back in a big way on Saturday with a fall, pinning Jared Torrence in 3:24.
Brenan Lyon made it four in a row for MSU with his 1-0 shutout over Derek Elmore at 125 pounds.
Michigan State will travel to Reno, Nev., for the Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday, Dec. 16.
