CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Six Spartans placed in the Northern Iowa Open on Saturday, including ninth-ranked Mike McClure, who won the heavyweight division with a 3-0 record. It marked McClure's fourth individual tournament victory of his career.
The fifth-year senior, who improved his record to 14-2 on the season, received a first-round bye before pinning Jon Scanlon of Iowa State in 2:05 in the second round. In the semifinals, McClure dominated UNI's Cody Krumweide with a 15-0 technical fall victory. McClure recorded a 12-1 major decision over Northern Iowa's Blaize Cabel in the championship match to claim first place.
Sophomore Brian Gibbs lost his first-round match but bounced back to five win straight to earn third-place honors at 141 pounds. Gibbs topped Peter Stewart of Iowa Western College in the third-place match, 7-6.
At 165 pounds, senior Bobby Nash won his first two matches by a combined score of 14-0, but he lost in the semifinals to Jordan Gagliano of Missouri by major decision, 11-2. Nash also lost his first bout in the consolation bracket; however, he bounced back with a pin in the fifth-place match, recording a fall against Casey Bartee of SIU-Edwardsville in 3:46.
The Michigan State wrestling team returns to action Dec. 29 for the Brute Invitational in Lock Haven, Pa.
