Spartans Finish 3-1 At South Beach Duals
Michigan State splits on second day of competition.
DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. - After going undefeated on the first day of South Beach Duals, Michigan State wrestling split its remaining two duals on Saturday to finish with a 3-1 overall record at the Deerfield Beach Sportsplex in Deerfield Beach, Florida. The Spartans defeated Binghamton to start off the day, 27-16, but fell to No. 24 North Carolina, 30-6, in the last match of the event.
“Today, our guys competed against a very good North Carolina team and they showed themselves that they can compete with anyone in the country but they have to create more scoring opportunities for themselves,” Michigan State head coach Roger Chandler said. “That’s by and large the biggest thing that came out of today.”
Michigan State racked up four technical falls, three major decisions and a pin in bonus points over the two days. Freshman Rayvon Foley (125) earned a major decision and technical fall, redshirt senior Javier Gasca (141) collected a technical fall and MSU’s lone pin, redshirt junior Austin Eicher (149) finished with a technical fall and Jake Tucker (157) garnered a technical fall and two major decisions.
At 125 pounds, Foley was the only Spartan to go 4-0 in dual matches, improving to 6-0 overall and leading the Spartans with dual wins.
“We have to look to score on all positions all the time and that’s what Rayvon Foley brings,” Chandler said. “Every time he steps on the mat he’s going to compete the entire time and try to score from every position. When you do that, you put yourself in the position to win, and he did that over the last two days.”
Five Spartans secured wins over Binghamton to win the match. Against No. 24 North Carolina, Foley and 165-pound redshirt freshman Austin Hiles put points on the board for the Green and White. For the second time this season, Hiles gained the lead over his opponent with just seconds left in the match, pulling ahead 6-5 against Clay Lautt after beingdown 5-2 through most of the third period.
“The biggest thing was that he didn’t stop wrestling,” Chandler said. “(Lautt) was going to try to just ride it out on the bottom, but Hiles kept looking to score and good things happen when you’re looking to attack and score in all positions.
“We have to get better every time we step on the mat and a lot of that depends on the level of competition that you’re facing. Do I think we took a step forward this weekend? Yes, I think our conditioning is very good but at the same time we’re stepping into the Big Ten now and our guys are going to have to be grittier and step up to the challenge.”
MSU has a big challenge ahead of it as the Spartans begin Big Ten Conference action on Friday, Jan. 5 against traditional power Iowa at 8 p.m. (ET) in Iowa City, Iowa. The match will be streamed on BTN Plus.
