Feb. 1, 1998 Michigan State Wrestlers Fall to IllinoisMorgan Still UndefeatedEAST LANSING, Mich. -- The No. 8 Michigan State wrestling team hosted it’s first home dual meet in nearly a month Sunday, dropping a 22-13 decision to conference foe No. 8 Illinois at Jenison Fieldhouse. The loss evens MSU’s record at 5-5 overall, 2-3 in the Big Ten, while the Fighting Illini improve to 8-2, 2-2. Senior captain David Morgan remained undefeated, improving to 29-0 with a 12-2 major decision over Illinois’ Steve Doerrer, and giving Michigan State a 4-0 lead. Illinois then won the next four matches, two in overtime, to take a 13-4 lead into intermission following the 150 lb. match. Junior Greg DeGrand cut the Illinois lead to 13-10 after 158, pinning Illinois’ Bell Zeman at 1:54, and sophomore Will Hill evened the score at 13 with a 9-3 win at 167. Illinois took the final three matches of the dual to make the final score 22-13. Michigan State will head to Montrose High School Sunday evening to take on Eastern Michigan at 7 p.m., and host the rival Michigan Wolverines at Jenison Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 7:30 p.m.
