Gomez Leads Wrestlers Through First Session Of Big Tens

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Michigan State junior 133-pounder Franklin Gomez earned two victories in as many bouts to lead the Spartans through the first session of the Big Ten Championships on Saturday, March 7. MSU currently sits in 10th place, scoring 18.5 points in the first two rounds of play.
The Spartans faced a combined six No. 1 seeds and faced two returning national champions.
Gomez pinned Indiana's Matt Ortega in 1:43 to notch his first win of the day and followed with a technical fall of seventh-seeded Zac Stevens of Michigan, 19-4. Gomez, seeded second at 133, draws six-seed Jake Strayer of Penn State in the quarterfinals.
At 125 pounds, redshirt freshman Eric Olanowski started the day on a high note, pinning eighth-seeded B.J. Futrell of Illinois in 4:01 to earn his 20th win of the season. Olanowski then dropped his second round bout to No. 1 seed Brandon Precin, losing an 11-0 major decision.
Seventh-ranked redshirt freshman Ian Hinton also picked up a win in the first session, defeating Minnesota's Matthew Everson, 12-7. Hinton then fell to top seed Steve Luke of Michigan, 12-4.
Collin Dozier, Anthony Jones Jr. and Rex Kendle suffered close defeats in the first round. David Cheza, Tyler Dickenson and Alan O'Donnell were pinned by the top seeds in their respective weight classes and Nick Palmieri was also pinned by the second seed.
