Franklin Gomez Drops Both Matches in London

Franklin Gomez dropped both matches in his first career Olympics.

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Former Spartan wrestler Franklin Gomez lost both matches today, Aug. 11, at the 2012 London Olympics in the 60kg freestyle competition. Gomez fell to Besik Kudukhov, the gold medal finalist of Russia, in the qualifying round and then to Yogeshawr Dutt of India in the repechage round.

Gomez, wrestling for Puerto Rico, lost by decision 2-2, 1-0, 1-0 to Kudukhov. Gomez qualified for the repechage round because he lost to Kudukhov, one of the two gold medal finalists.

After splitting the first period, Kudukhov took the second with a takedown with only 10 seconds remaining. Then Kudukhov scored another takedown in the third, with only five seconds on the clock, sealing the decision.

Gomez topped Kudukhov at the Grand Prix of Germany in June, and before that Kudukhov hadn't lost a match in three years. Both wrestlers also faced in the 2011 World Championships, where Kudukhov and Gomez finished first and second, respectively

Gomez then faced Dutt in the repechage bracket, giving him a chance at the bronze medal.

Dutt won the first period of the repechage match, 1-0, with a leg clinch. In a tough second period Gomez lost the ball draw and dropped the period, 1-0, giving Dutt the decision.
