Meet the Spartans: Brendan Black
Get to know new Spartan freshman wrestler Brendan Black
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State wrestling will feature a freshman periodically throughout the preseason in order to “Meet the Spartans” leading up to the 2017-18 season.
This week freshman Brendan Black (Hobart, Indiana/Hobart High School) sat down with msuspartans.com to answer some questions.
1. Why did you choose to wrestle at Michigan State?
I decided to become a Spartan because I felt that it’s the place I had felt most at home than any other schools that I had visited. I feel mainly because my best friend is already on the team and it’ll be a great experience to be able to wrestle with him, and get to know everyone he speaks highly of!
2. What are you most excited about as you begin your Spartan wrestling career?
I am most excited to be able to start pursuing the career that I want to do, and to be able to wrestle as a Spartan at the same time just puts the icing on the cake!
3.When did you first start wrestling?
I started when I was six years old.
4. Favorite wrestling memory?
One of my favorite memories wrestling probably would have to be when I was on a team with Drew Hughes. This kid I was wrestling had punched me in the face and Drew was more pissed than me. He started to run out onto the mat after the kid and some of our wrestlers had to grab him and take him away from the mat. The whole situation was kind of funny because I was stunned in disbelief that the kid actually punched me in the face because people just don’t do that!
5. What your major at Michigan State and why?
My major is construction management. I am pursuing this major because I have a lot of ties with my family in construction. I have done construction with them a lot of my high school career during the summers which made me realize that’s what I wanted to do, but I wanted to be the boss, therefore I’m pursuing construction management degree.
6. Who has taught you the most about wrestling growing up?
This would have to be my coach Bill Hawkins. I started wrestling with him when I was about eight years old and even though he was not my high school coach, I worked with him throughout my high school career during the summers.
7. What superhero power would you have if you could choose one?
I would have to pick Superman - I feel like all around he’s the best superhero!
8. Favorite meal?
My favorite meal would have to be steak, mashed potatoes, and green beans but I really don’t complain, I kind of just love food!
9. Favorite TV show?
10. Favorite thing to do besides wrestling?
Anything X-sports I love dirt biking, skateboarding, BMX all that jazz.
