EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State wrestling will unofficially get the 2017-18 season rolling with the annual Green and White Wrestle Offs on Thursday, Oct. 26 at wrestling practice gym in IM West. The meet will begin at 6 p.m., and there will be giveaways and prizes for fans. Admission is free.
Michigan State loses only three seniors from head coach Roger Chandler’s first season at the helm of the MSU program, returning nine letterwinners. Highlighting the returning Spartans is Austin Eicher, Drew Hughes and Javier Gasca, who made appearances at last year’s NCAA Championships in the Green and White. The Spartans have 17 newcomers, 16 of which are freshmen and one transfer from Lake Erie.
In the latest FloWrestling NCAA rankings, three Spartans were ranked in the top-20 in the nation. Sophomore Drew Hughes was ranked at No. 9 at 174 pounds, redshirt senior Javier Gasca came in at No. 10 at 144 pounds and redshirt junior Austin Eicher rounded out the ranked Spartans at No. 16 at 133 pounds, marking the highest preseason rankings for the trio.
Last season, the Spartans’ 10th-place finish at the Big Ten Championships was their highest since also placing 10th at the 2012 Championships. MSU’s 38.5 points at the event is the Spartans’ highest point total since 41.5 in 2012, showing the signs of the program’s progress in the first year under Chandler.
MSU’s season officially begins on Saturday, Nov. 5 by hosting the annual Michigan State Open at Jenison Field House.
