EAST LANSING, Mich.- The Michigan State wrestling team begins the 2011-12 season at the Eastern Michigan Open in Ypsilanti, Mich., on Saturday, Nov. 5. The open will be held at Bowen Field House and begins at 9 a.m.
"We did five weeks of preseason strength and conditioning, and three weeks of practice, so after a couple of months our kids are just itching to get some competition," said head coach Tom Minkel, who enters his 21st season in East Lansing. "We are looking forward to it; it is a nice trip down to Ypsilanti. They have a large field and a good group of competitors down there. It will be a good test for us and let us know what we need to work on, and we are all looking forward to that."
Two separate divisions will compete in the tournament. The freshman/sophomore division is available to first and second year wrestlers on a collegiate roster. All other wrestlers on a collegiate roster will compete in the open division.
Last year at the EMU Open four Spartan wrestlers took home titles. Junior Dan Osterman (149 pounds) and sophomore Michael McClure (heavyweight) claimed titles in the open bracket, while Luke Jones (174) and Nick McDiarmid (197) took first in the freshman/sophomore division.
The tournament is double elimination and six places will be awarded in each weight class.
The Spartans return home the following weekend to host the Michigan State Open at Jenison Field House on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 9 a.m.
