Javier Gasca Named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week
Redshirt senior earns first career B1G weekly plaudit, third-straight MSU Open title last weekend.
EAST LANSING, Mich. -
Michigan State wrestler Javier Gasca was named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week for his performance at the Michigan State Open last Sunday, Nov. 5. This marks Gasca’s first career Big Ten weekly honor, and he is the first Spartan wrestler to earn the accolade since Drew Hughes last season on Dec. 20, 2016.
Gasca, a redshirt senior from Kingsburg, California, claimed his third consecutive MSU Open title at the event. At 141 pounds, Gasca went undefeated in all five matches through the day with four decisions and a fall at 3:56 in the first round.
Ranked No. 9 by FloWrestling going into the competition, Gasca bested three ranked opponents to claim the title. In the quarterfinals, Gasca earned a 9-6 decision over No. 12 Eli Stickley from Wisconsin. Advancing to the semifinals, Gasca defeated No. 16 Sal Profaci of Michigan in a 5-4 decision. For the title, he topped No. 14 Michael Longo of Oklahoma in a 4-3 decision.
Gasca’s previous two Michigan State Open titles came at 141 pounds as a junior and at 131 pounds as a sophomore.
In addition to Gasca’s title, the Spartans took three titles in the freshman/sophomore division. The titles came unattached from freshmen Jaden Enriquez at 141 pounds, Nathan Atienza at 157 pounds and Cameron Caffey at 184 pounds. MSU posted 14 top-six finishes overall, beginning the 2017-18 campaign with a dominating showing.
This week, Michigan State will travel to Ypsilanti, Michigan, for the EMU Open on Saturday, Nov. 11.
