EAST LANSING, Mich. - Junior heavyweight Michael McClure was named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week as announced by the conference office on Tuesday, Dec. 18, after taking first place at the Reno Tournament of Champions last weekend. This is McClure's second wrestler of the week honor of the season after also being recognized on Nov. 13.
The Holland, Mich., native went 5-0 at the Reno Tournament of Champions, taking first place and improving his individual record to 17-1. McClure defeated three wrestlers ranked inside the top 20 and moved up to No. 7 in the latest individual ranking according to Intermat.
McClure opened the tournament with back-to-back shutout decisions, posting a 9-0 major decision over Brendan TerWee of Stanford and a 6-0 decision over Peter Anqiuano of Grand Canyon.
McClure then rattled off three straight victories over top-20 ranked opponents. McClure took down ninth-ranked J.T. Felix of Boise State, 4-2 and followed that up with a 5-2 decision over No. 6 Chad Hanke of Oregon State.
In the championship match, McClure pinned No. 16 Odie Delaney of The Citadel in 3:40, to claim the individual title. McClure also finished first at the MSU Open and the EMU Open earlier this season.
Following the break, the Spartans and McClure will host Purdue on Friday, Jan. 4 at 7 p.m. inside Jenison Field House.
