Women Surge To Sixth Place At NCAA Cross Country Championship

Caleb Rhynard earns first All-American honors with 34th-place finish.

Kyle Baker is in his third year as an assistant coach for the Michigan State cross country program. The former Spartan runner graduated in 1999 with a degree in business administration and interpersonal communication. Baker was a four-time NCAA All-American in cross country and a four-time Big Ten Track Champion.

Baker finished another series of outstanding races this past season. His finished in first place at the Spartan Invitational (24:39), 14th at the 5k Road Championship in Rhode Island (14:23) and 12th overall, and third among Americans, at the Chicago Marathon. At the Chicago Marathon, Baker was the fourth-fastest runner and qualified for the 2004 Olympic Trials.

Baker finished in fifth place at the 1997 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 13:57.21, and also earned All-America honors in the 3,000-meters at the 1997 and 1999 indoor championships.

Baker was the 1999 Big Ten Outdoor Champion in the 10,000-meters in 29:26.68, and won the 1997 Big Ten Outdoor title at 5,000 meters. He also captured 3,000 and 5,000-meter indoor crowns in 1997.
