Sept. 16, 2005

East Lansing, Mich. - - Stephan Shay (East Jordan, Mich.), running unattached, turned in a strong race on a soggy Forest Akers East course to lead the Michigan State men's cross country team in the 2005 Spartan Invitational. Shay finished second with a time of 24:46, completing the 8K course just tenths of a second behind Eastern Michigan's Corey Nowitzke. Two more Spartans finished in the top ten as senior Nathan Egger (Bath, Mich.) took third place (24:54) and Nick Oertel (Goodrich, Mich.) was sixth (25:04).

Andy Marsh (Grand Ledge, Mich.), who also ran unattached, and John Zonotti (Chesterfield, Mich.) finished 11th and 12th, respectively, with times of 25:15 and 25:18. Junior Jim Pancoast (Stevensville, Mich.) turned in a 25:23 to finish 15th in a race that saw every Michigan State racer completed the course in under 27:00.

"It was a good race for us," said head coach Walt Drenth. "We've put together two in a row now, hopefully we can keep our momentum going forward."

The Green and White will head to Minneapolis, Minn. next weekend to compete in the Roy Griak invitational on Saturday Sept. 24. It will be Michigan State's first scored meet of the season.
