"Defensively, we really fell apart at the end of the first half and definitely in the second half," said MSU head coach Karen Langeland. "You can't win games against teams like that with poor defense." Senior guard Tamika Matlock (Detroit) led MSU's attack with 14 points, 10 assists, two steals and a career-high eight rebounds. Junior guard Jamie Wesley (Morrice) added 14 points, including 12 in the second half, and senior forward Paula Sanders (Detroit) brought down a game-high 15 rebounds, scored 10 points and had five assists. Danielle Viglione led Texas with 18 points, including 14 in the first half, while Vanessa Wallace contributed 12 points and Taryn Brown scored 10. Amie Smith had 10 rebounds. "Michigan State came to play and we wondered if we did," said Texas head coach Jody Conradt. "They started out well but we didn't allow ourselves to go down. Both of our teams are a lot alike and both teams proved they're deserving more attention. We're really evenly matched."
