Terry Smith joined the Spartan women's basketball staff on Sept. 7, 2010, as an assistant coach. A graduate of Michigan State, Smith comes to the Spartan program with 19 of years of collegiate head coaching experience.
Smith will be instrumental in the development of the Spartan offense, while assisting with individual skill development, opponent scouting, game planning, and recruiting. He will also be the coordinator of the MSU summer camps.
Most recently, Smith spent the last three seasons as the men's basketball head coach at Alma College in Alma, Mich., after previous stops at Grand Valley State University (1997-2004) and Lake Superior State University (1991-97). Smith got his start in collegiate coaching as an assistant coach at Ferris State University during the 1987-88 season, before moving to Lake Superior as an assistant in 1988 until he was promoted to head coach in 1991.
After graduating from MSU, Smith got his start in coaching at the high school level, leading Fulton High School and Cedar Springs High School, before moving on to Ferris State in 1987.
Between his stops at Grand Valley and Alma, Smith was a teacher/assistant principal and boys' basketball coach at Hart Public Schools. While at Hart, he also coached the Holland Blast, a professional basketball team in the IBL (International Basketball League).
Smith graduated from MSU with a B.S. in physical education in 1984. During his coaching career he has also earned his M.A. in physical education from Central Michigan University and his M.A.- Education Leadership Certificate from Grand Valley.
