EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's basketball program hosted its first Halloween Hoops event on Sunday afternoon at the Breslin Center. The Spartans took part in a 40-minute scrimmage, before conducting a costume contest and signing autographs for the fans in attendance.
"It was the first time we did Halloween Hoops," said head coach Suzy Merchant. "We were excited about trying it. I loved the costumes and the atmosphere, and it was a really good crowd. The timing was good so they could still go out trick-or-treating after. Overall, I thought it was a great turnout."
The first 20 minutes of the scrimmage was a split-squad, Green vs. White. The Green squad won 27-26 on a 3-pointer by senior Kalisha Keane with 22 seconds remaining. Junior Lykendra Johnson led the Green with six points, while senior Cetera Washington, juniors Taylor Alton and Porsche Poole, and sophomore Jasmine Thomas each had four points in the winning effort. Freshman Bryonna Davis led the White with seven points. Redshirt freshman Kelsey Smith chipped in six and redshirt sophomore Courtney Schiffauer added five points for the White.
The final 20 minutes of running time featured the Spartans against the guys on the scout team. The scout team led by as much as six points and by three at 17-14 with four minutes to go. MSU would score the final nine points to seal the win. Keane led the Green & White with seven points, including the game-winner basket with a minute and a half to go. Schiffauer was second on the team with five points.
