Recap |  Box Score

Michigan State Head Coach Suzy Merchant

On today's defensive effort...
I still think we have a lot of work to do defensively. But I thought the start of the second half kind of opened things up a little bit for us. We got off to a good start with a lot of tips and steals and had some turnovers there. We just did not convert on the other end like we did the other night, we just did not put the ball in the basket as well.

On freshman Klarissa Bell and Annalise Pickrel...
Klarissa has really done a great job out of the gates here. She stays within herself, she plays with aggressiveness but is not out of control, which sometimes freshman can be, their mind is racing a hundred miles an hour and she has a nice strong easy presence about her. Annalise kind of struggles a little bit with plays and things like that, she has got to do a better job of understanding our system and knowing when she is open and when to run a play. She has got some athleticism and some quickness and some good instincts. Both of them have high IQ's and good instincts for the game. We certainly anticipate them being in our rotation pretty significantly.

On junior guard Porsche Poole's play...
She is an interesting one as a coach because, she can get steals and she is not in a good position or stance. She can ignite but lulls you to sleep a little bit at both ends and then all of a sudden she is by you on offense. She is really explosive, she is great in transition games. She sees the floor very well, I think offensively that is her greatest gift, getting people involved in the offense, not only herself but others. Defensively you think she is not in a play and then she gets the tip and gets us going.

On play in the second half...
We missed a lot of lay-ups, we did not do a very good job converting at the other end. There was a lull there for sure. I thought we had good looks at it, the ball just did not go in. Credit some of that to Grand Valley too, I thought they were scrappy team and played hard and got the best of us a little bit at times. We got tangled up a few times, they play with a lot of aggressiveness and they are a very good team.
