In the first Preseason WNIT game in school history, MSU defeated IUPUI, 65-35, Friday night at the Breslin Center before a crowd of 4,765...it marked the largest season-opening attendance in program history (previous: 3,960 vs. UC Santa Barbara in 2005)...it marked the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
Michigan State advances to the Preseason WNIT Second Round to take on Evansville Sunday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m....Evansville defeated Marshall, 89-77, Friday night in Evansville, Ind...Sunday will mark the first meeting between the Spartans and Purple Aces.
In her MSU debut, head coach Suzy Merchant won by 30 points, the biggest margin of victory for a Spartan coach in her first game...the fifth coach in program history, Merchant becomes the third Spartan coach to win in her debut...Dominic Marino beat Oakland, 71-39, in 1976, and Joanne P. McCallie beat Arkansas State, 76-60, in 2000.
Dating back to 2001-02 at Eastern Michigan, Suzy Merchant has won seven straight season openers.
More than 300 fans made the trip south from Traverse City, Suzy Merchant's hometown, to the game on Friday night.

Cetera Washington made the first shot of her career and the first of the season for the Spartans with a jumper 17 seconds into the game, quickly putting MSU up 2-0...Washington finished the game 4-for-6 shooting with nine points, a team-best six assists and three steals.
Allyssa DeHaan hit her first shot of the season with a left-handed layup at the 19:03 mark in the first half...she finished with 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting...she also posted seven blocks, marking the seventh time in her career she has collected seven blocks or more.
MSU started out the game on a 12-0 run...the Spartans held IUPUI scoreless the first 5:31 of the game.
MSU missed its first five 3-pointers of the game, but hit six of their next 12 to finish 6-for-17 from 3-point range.
The Spartans limited the Jaguars to 23.7 percent shooting for the game and 13.8 percent for the second half.
MSU's defense limited IUPUI to 13 second-half points, nearly a Breslin Center record...Indiana was held to 12 points on Jan. 16, 2003.
For the game, IUPUI was held to 35 points...the Breslin Center record for fewest points in a game is 33 by Michigan on Jan. 18, 2004.
The 35 points are the fewest for a Spartan opponent since Michigan was limited to 34 points on Feb. 23, 2005.
MSU's 30-point victory was the largest margin of victory since a 33-point win (77-44) over Michigan on Jan. 1, 2006.
Michigan State was 13-of-14 from the free-throw line...Kalisha Keane was a perfect 6-for-6 from the line.
Sophomore Mandy Piechowski scored a career-high six points with two 3-pointers...Piechowski's season-high in 2005-06 was four at Maryland on Jan. 6, 2007...she also had a career-high three rebounds.
Merchant had three freshmen in the starting lineup (Brittney Thomas, Cetera Washington, Kalisha Keane), while Taja Wilson played 16 minutes off the bench...Keane led the freshman with 12 points, while Washington had nine, Wilson had eight and Thomas had five.
Michigan State has won nine straight season openers...in its 36th year, the program is now 24-12 in season openers.
MSU held preseason Summit League selection Jernisha Cann to four points on 1-of-13 shooting.
