Michigan State-Bucknell Postgame Quotes

Nov. 17, 2006

Recap |  Box Score

Michigan State Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie
Opening statement...
It's a solid game for us to start the season. We played excellent defense and had some very good rebounding. There are things we have to work on, but for a first game it was definitely better than last time out. Hopefully, we can continue to get better each time we hit the floor.

On the defense forcing 20 turnovers...
We have lots of players who can create ball pressure and it's important to us. We need to be a team that creates that ball pressure to take advantage of opportunities from the turnovers we force. It was great that we forced 20 turnovers and we only had 10, which is a low for us so far this year. We need to do a good job taking care of the basketball and really apply the pressure so other teams have a hard time with it.

On Rene Haynes...
I love the game Rene has played so far this year. When you look at Rene, she's got to do so many things as point guard. She had seven rebounds and a 4-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio and I just loved her game. I thought she was calm and in charge. She'll take shots when she needs to but her primary thing is to run the offense, direct the ball and show strong decision-making out there, and I thought she did that.

Michigan State senior guard Victoria Lucas-Perry
On the team's chemistry...
We have our highs and our lows and there are times when we're where we want to be, but it's a test for us to be consistent and keep our intensity for the whole 40 minutes.

On being relied on as a primary scoring threat...
That's not really an issue - if you're open, shoot the ball. Great players don't worry about how they're going to score. You have to have faith in your teammates that they'll get you the ball when you're open. You take your shot when you need to and we've got great players that can score any night. I'm up for any challenge that comes, whether it's points, rebounds or whatever else.

On forcing turnovers on defense...
It's our intensity. We really checked them on defense and we have really athletic guards that can really pressure the ball. There are times when you saw that out there where Bucknell couldn't handle the pressure and that's what we took advantage of.
