Recap |  Box Score

Michigan State Head Coach Suzy Merchant

On the Spartan defense and the foul situation...
They only shot from the line five times in the first half and in the second half they shot 20. It's disappointing. I think that I'd have to watch the film to really see but I think that there were some that were legitimate fouls. There's no question about that. We just need to do a better job of keeping our hands and our bodies off of people. One of our main goal is to not put people at the foul line so that we don't give people easy points. We want to make them earn it. I thought that we did a poor job at that.

On the turnovers made by the Spartans...
We turned it over too much again and they were silly turnovers too. We're working at it. We are aware that we just have to do a better job of staying focused and stepping through the ball. I'm not sure if it is because we played a lot of people too. Everybody played double digits. We can go deeper, which is a good thing, but we can't keep taking ourselves out of games by giving it back to them.

On the increase of three-point attempts...
I didn't want to shoot that many. I want to play it inside-out. There are certain kids on this team that are three-point shooters and some that aren't. I thought that we got a little trigger happy at times, especially in the first half. Some kids have that green light but the other kids that don't, shot it a little too early in the shot clock. We can do that any time. There is no need for that. I think that we just need to be more balanced and use the film as a teaching tool.

On the personality of the team after three games in...
I think that the main difference from last year is the awareness of what we are trying to accomplish. Last year, for the majority of the season, we were really trying to figure out our identity. I think now we have a little more identity and a little more leadership. And our younger players that are sophomores are very experienced sophomores. They have played so many minutes that they are really like juniors. I know that we can rely on them to bring this team together because they have been there.

On having Brittney Thomas back in the lineup...
We wanted to see what Brittney could do with her cast on there. I was teasing her and telling her that she needs to break her hand more often; she shot that ball pretty good. I think that there is a lot more confidence defensively as a team when she is out there. She can cover so many sins, she understands, she communicates and she can defend 94 feet. I really wanted to look at more of our pressure stuff but I really felt that in this situation we weren't able to do that. I think that the kids have a lot of confidence in Brittney and getting her back out on the floor probably feels pretty good to them.
