EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State sophomore Becky Cummings scored a career-high 21 points and the Spartans dominated the boards in a 79-67 victory over Ohio tonight at the Breslin Center. The victory improves MSUs overall record to 5-3, while the Bobcats fall to 0-5 on the season.

"This was a win and we needed a win," MSU coach Karen Langeland said. "I thought we got some good performances from a few people, but as a team I was really disappointed with how we performed in the second half."

Cummings scored 15 of her 21 points in the first half and the Spartans held the Bobcats to just nine points in the first 10 minutes of the contest as MSU raced out to a 40-21 halftime lead.

The Spartans committed 14 turnovers in the second half as the Bobcats cut the deficit to 13 points several times. Junior Maxann Reese scored 14 of her season-high 22 points in the second half to help MSU hold on for the victory.

Cummings added 11 boards for her third double-double of the season, while Kristen Rasmussen scored 10 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the year. Sophomore Donita Johnson, making her second-straight start at the point, contributed a career-high 11 rebounds to help the Spartans dominate the glass, 51-21.

Freshman guard Jacquie Negrelli came off the bench to score 13 points for the Bobcats, while rookie Amber Bunce also added 12 points.

The Spartans travel to Carbondale, Ill., to take on Southern Illinois on Saturday, Dec. 12. Tipoff is slated for a 3 p.m., EST.
