Michigan State Comeback Falls Short
Spartan Women's Basketball Loses to Hawaii, 75-68
HONOLULU, HI -The Michigan State women's basketball team dropped a 75-68 decision to host Hawaii in the second round of the Ala Moana Hotel Paradise Classic in Honolulu, HI. The loss dropped the Spartans to 5-4 overall, while th eWahine improved to 8-1.
Hawaii built a 36-24 halftime lead and extended it to 20 points early in the second half. Rookie Nikki Davis came off the bench and scored 10 points during a 20-6 Spartan run to cut the Wahine's lead to 56-50 with 7:40 remaining in the contest.
Hawaii responded and held a 10-point lead (68-58) with 3:13 left in the game. The Spartans would again cut the lead to six points on a three-pointer by senior Jamie Wesley with just 44 seconds in the game, but it was as close as MSU would get.
Wesley finished with 16 points for the Spartans, while Davis added a career-high 12 points all in the second half. Senior Bella Engen added 14 points, while Maxann Reese and Kristen Rasmussen chipped in 12 points each. Rasmussen was the leading rebounder for MSU with 11 boards.
The Spartans close out the tournament with a contest against McNeese State on Monday, Dec. 22, at 10 p.m., EST.
