EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State redshirt freshman Aerial Powers was recognized as the Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Monday. The 6-0 forward, who was also named to the conference's player of the week honor roll, averaged 15.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists in the two Spartan wins this week.
It is the fourth time this season that Powers was named Freshman of the Week, tying Minnesota's Amanda Zahui B., for the most in the conference this season.
Powers was also efficient shooting this week, shooting 10-for-20 (50.0%) from the field, including making her only 3-point attempt, and going 10-for-12 (83.3%) from the free throw line.
On Thursday in MSU's win over Wisconsin, Powers posted 12 points, six rebounds and three assists in 29 minutes, shooting 5-for-8 from the field.
Yesterday, Powers led the Spartans in the 89-73 upset of No. 19/16 Purdue with her sixth double-double of the season. She led the team with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while also tying her season-high with five assists. Powers also set a season high, going 9-for-10 from the foul line. Her six double-double are now the fourth most by a Spartan freshman.
On the season, Powers leads the Spartans in points (13.8), rebounds (7.9) and steals (1.9), while also shooting a team-best 50.9% from the field. Her 13.8 points per game average is currently the best-ever by a Spartan freshman and her 303 total points are seventh on the MSU freshman scoring list.
The Spartans, who moved back into the Associated Press top-25 poll this week at No. 24, head to Illinois on Wednesday for a 8 p.m. ET tip.
