March 3, 1998
Michigan State senior basketball player Bella Engen has been named to the GTE Academic All-District IV squad. A native of Hoenfoss, Norway, Engen carries a 3.74 grade-point average as an economics major.
Engen recently completed her final season with the Spartan women's basketball team. She was MSU's leading scorer with a 13.2 points per game average this season. An Honorable Mention All-Big Ten selection this season, Engen became the eighth player in Spartan history to score 1,000 points and finished her career ranked sixth on the all-time chart with 1,088 points.
The district team is made up of student-athletes from Division I schools in Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. To be nominated, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve, and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) within the district.
Engen's name will now appear on the national ballot for GTE Academic All-America consideration.
