Liz Shimek Earns Honorable Mention All-America Honors
April 3, 2006 EAST LANSING, Mich. - While the season is complete, Michigan State forward Liz Shimek continues to collect honors for her outstanding senior year in 2005-06. For the second consecutive year, Shimek has been named a Kodak/WBCA honorable mention All-American as well as an Associated Press honorable mention All-American. Shimek is the first Spartan to earn back-to-back honorable mention All-America accolades. Shimek, one of 10 finalists for the Bayer Advantage Senior Class Award, was also named to the All-Senior All-America team, garnering second-team honors. Shimek, a first-team All-Big Ten selection, was third in the league in scoring (17.6 ppg), second in rebounding (8.3 rpg) and sixth in field-goal percentage (54.1). She was named Big Ten Player of the Week a school-record four times this season, and was named the WBCA National Co-Player of the Month in December. Shimek, who collected eight double-doubles, was also dominant in the postseason, leading the Spartans with a 14.7 scoring average in the NCAA Tournament in addition to being named to the All-Big Ten Tournament team for her 27.0 scoring average. She established MSU single-season records for points (597) and field goals (249). The Empire, Mich., native leaves Michigan State as the all-time leading scorer (1,780 points) and rebounder (1,130) in school history.
