Women's Basketball Defeats Simon Fraser All-Star Team

Vancouver, British Columbia - The Michigan State women's basketball team opened its Canadian Tour with an 89-83 win over the Simon Fraser All-Star team on Wednesday, Aug. 18 in Burnaby, British Columbia.

The Spartans got off to a slow start, but went into the intermission with a slim 40-39 advantage. Senior Kristen Rasmussen (East Lansing/Okemos HS) and junior Becky Cummings (Walled Lake) scored 10 points each in the opening half to pace MSU.

MSU built up an 11-point lead late in the game, but Simon Fraser mounted a comeback and cut the deficit to just three points (82-79) with 1:30 left in the game. Rasmussen found junior Erin Skelly (Maple Grove, MN) underneath for an easy basket to push the lead to five with 1:12 to play and MSU hit five of six free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.

?I thought we played well considering it's August,? MSU coach Karen Langeland said. ?We had balanced scoring and rebounding and we shot well from the floor. I was disappointed in our defense because we gave up way too many three-point opportunities.?

Senior Maxann Reese (Highland Park) scored all of her game-high 21 points in the second half, hitting 7-of-14 shots from the field. Rasmussen closed out the contest with 19 points and six rebounds, while Cummings scored 14 points and added a team high eight rebounds. Cummings scored most of her points at the free throw line, connecting on 10-of-15 shots from the charity stripe.

The game marked the return of redshirt freshman Vnemina Reese (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and junior Nikki Davis (Brighton) from knee injuries. The pair missed almost all of the 1998-99 campaign with season-ending knee injuries that required surgery in January.

Reese played 13 minutes and contributed two points and two steals, while Davis added four points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals in 19 minutes of action.

?It was great to have Mina and Nikki back on the court,? Langeland said. ?I thought they both played well considering the seventh-month layoff.?

The Spartans will play the Simon Fraser All-Stars again on Thursday, Aug. 19 at 7:30 p.m., PDT.
