Vancouver, British Columbia - Senior Kristen Rasmussen (East Lansing/Okemos HS) scored 23 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the Michigan State women's basketball team to a 77-62 win over the Simon Fraser All-Star team on Thursday, Aug. 19 in Richmond, British Columbia. The win improved the Spartans' record to 2-0 on their five-game Canadian Tour.

MSU struggled in the first half for the second straight game and fell behind, 38-32, at the half. Rasmussen converted an offensive put back at the 15:50 mark in the second half to give MSU a 42-41 lead, its first advantage since early in the game.

The defining moment in the game came with less than six minutes remaining when the Spartans scored seven points in a 12 second span to turn a one point deficit into an eight-point lead.

Rasmussen hit a three-pointer from the right wing at the 5:22 mark to put MSU on top 63-59. Simon Fraser committed a foul on the play, sending senior Maxann Reese (Highland Park) to the foul line where she converted two throws to give the Spartans a 65-59 lead.

Reese stole the ball after Simon Fraser in bounded the ball and dished to a streaking Donita Johnson (Clinton Township), who converted the easy layup to give MSU a 67-59 advantage with 5:10 to play.

Simon Fraser was forced to foul down the stretch and the Spartans converted at the free throw line to push the final margin of victory to 15 points.

The 6-4 Rasmussen did it all for MSU, leading the team in points (23), rebounds (11), assists (6) and blocks (2).

Reese added 14 points and six rebounds, while contributing four steals in a solid defensive outing. Junior Becky Cummings (Walled Lake) contributed 13 points and eight rebounds, while junior Erin Skelly (Maple Grove, MN) came off the bench to add eight points.

MSU will face Simon Fraser for a third and final time on Saturday, Aug. 21 at 7 p.m., PDT.
