Oct. 5, 2009

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's basketball head coach Suzy Merchant was recognized on Friday night by the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM) as its 2009 Women's College Coach of the Year. It was the first BCAM honor for Merchant.

Merchant led the Spartans to a 22-11 overall record and a trip to the NCAA Sweet 16 this past season. MSU tied for second in the Big Ten with a 13-5 record, tying for the second-most conference win in program history. The Green and White upset No. 1-seed Duke, 63-49, in the NCAA Tournament Second Round, becoming just the third No. 9 seed to advance to the Sweet 16 in NCAA history. As a team, Michigan State led the Big Ten in scoring defense, field goal percentage defense, 3-point field goal percentage defense, rebound margin and blocks.

Through her first two seasons at MSU, Merchant has gone 45-25 overall and 23-13 in Big Ten play, marking the most wins in the first two seasons for any coach in program history.
