EAST LANSING, Mich. - The 2012-13 season will get underway on Thursday night when the Michigan State women's basketball team hosts Saginaw Valley State in its first exhibition game. Tip time is set for 7 p.m. ET.

Michigan State is coming off its 11th straight postseason appearance and ninth consecutive 20-win season. The Spartans went 20-11 overall and finished in a tie for second in the Big Ten at 11-5 last season. MSU earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth year in a row, but fell in the first round to No. 19 Louisville.

For the second-straight season, the Spartans graduated three starters, and have been hampered with injuries so far this fall. The burden will fall on this year's captains - seniors Courtney Schiffauer and Jasmine Thomas, and junior Klarissa Bell - to carry the squad to another postseason berth.

Saginaw Valley State returns four of its five starters from last year's team that went 6-20 overall. The Cardinals are coached by second-year head coach Jamie Pewinski, who played for Coach Merchant at SVSU in 1998-99. The two schools last met in a 2010 exhibition game, a 90-40 Spartan victory.
