EAST LANSING, Mich. - In its second and final exhibition contest of the season, the Michigan State women's basketball team welcomes Grand Valley State to the Breslin Center on Sunday. The game is scheduled to tip at 2 p.m.

The Spartans opened exhibition play with a 90-40 victory over Saginaw Valley State on Thursday. Senior Kalisha Keane led MSU with 20 points, hitting all four of her 3-point attempts. Junior Lykendra Johnson and freshman Klarissa Bell each added 11 points, while senior Cetera Washington chipped in 10. Redshirt sophomore Courtney Schiffauer grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and senior Brittney Thomas dished out seven assists with no turnovers.

MSU's new up-tempo style led to a 21-0 edge in fastbreak points, in addition to forcing 26 turnovers, which led to 32 Spartan points. MSU held a 52-36 rebounding edge and outshot SVSU, 47.3%-25.5%. The Spartans hit 53.3% (8-of-15) of its 3-point field goals.

Michigan State was picked to finish third in the Big Ten in a vote by both the coaches and media. In addition, the Spartans enter the season No. 25 in the Associated Press poll and No. 24 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches poll.

Grand Valley State was selected to finish first in the GLIAC North Division in the preseason poll. The Lakers return eight letterwinners and four starters from last year's team that went 18-10 overall and 15-7 in the GLIAC. Sophomore Alex Stelfox, the reigning GLIAC Freshman of the Year, was named to the North Division Preseason All-GLIAC First Team. She led GVSU with 12.0 points, a 56.2 field goal pct. and 40 blocks. Junior Jasmine Padin was preseason second team All-GLIAC North Division. She averaged 9.6 points, while leading the team with 51 three-pointers, 117 assists and 51 steals.

 

 

MSU freshman Annalise Pickrel and GVSU freshman Lindsay McCarty were high school teammates at Grand Rapids Catholic Central, leading GRCC to the Class B state title at Breslin Center.

The Spartans open the 2010-11 regular season on Saturday, November 13, when they host IPFW at 3 p.m. at the Breslin Center. The game will be broadcast live on BigTenNetwork.com and can be heard locally on WVFN 730AM.
