Spartans Battle Top Crews in Ivy-Big Ten Double Dual

March 24, 2018

CAMDEN, N.J. – The Spartan rowing team faced top-tier competition Saturday, racing against powerhouse programs in Harvard/Radcliffe and Yale in the Ivy League-Big Ten Double Dual on the Cooper River Rowing Course in Camden, New Jersey.

Ohio State also raced in the dual, facing both teams from the Ivy League.

“The highlight of the day for us was seeing the improvement of our novice eight boat. They raced against Yale last weekend and lost by a couple of seconds,” said head coach Matt Weise. “This weekend they improved and were able to come within a half of a second of winning the race against Yale so that was really exciting for us to see.”

Michigan State started out the morning racing Harvard/Radcliffe followed by the afternoon session where the Spartans went head-to-head with Yale.

In MSU’s first race of the morning, the Spartan varsity eight was edged by Harvard/Radcliffe (6:43.1), by about six seats, clocking a time of 6:48.2.

The Spartan second varsity eight fell to Radcliffe by open water with Radcliffe posting a time of 6:52.9 and MSU finishing at 7:05.3.

The Spartan second varsity four raced Radcliffe tough, falling by less than two seconds recording a time of 7:55.1. Radcliffe’s winning boat came in at 7:53.4.

MSU’s novice eight defeated Radcliffe in dominating fashion, recording an open water victory for the Green and White clocking a time of 7:04.6 with Radcliffe posting a 7:29.7.

The Spartans kicked off the afternoon session with the varsity eight racing against Yale, placing second with a time of 6:49.9 while Yale recorded a 6:38.8.

The varsity four race went to the Bulldogs in a time of 7:33.2, with and MSU recording a 7:43.5.

The strongest performance of the day once again came from the novice eight, which battled down the course and was edged by Yale by the smallest of margins. MSU’s 6:54.7 was a bowball behind Yale (6:54.2).

The Spartan crews will split next weekend, with the novice eight, the 2v4 and the 3v4 heading to Ohio State to race the Buckeyes while the NCAA squad will head to the Pac 12/Big Ten Challenge in Redwood Shores, California. All crews will race on Saturday.
