Spartans Conclude Competition at Pac-12 Challenge

April 1, 2018

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. – No. 18 Michigan State wrapped up competition at the Pac-12 Challenge on Sunday morning, racing against No. 10 Stanford in Redwood Shores, California.

The two-day regatta had the Spartans facing top-tier competition in No. 10 Stanford, No. 12 USC and No. 2 Cal.

MSU’s varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four all raced Sunday morning to conclude the weekend of racing.

The Spartan varsity eight battled tough against Stanford, but came in behind the Cardinals with a time of 6:39.0 while the host school posted a 6:23.1.

“We have some work to do, but all of the boats improved through the weekend. The crews did a better job of finding their base rhythm and holding that down the race course,” said head coach Matt Weise. “We are disappointed with the results, but not the process. I expect the team to make large speed gains in the next few weeks as they apply what they learned this weekend.”

The second varsity eight placed second against Stanford, with MSU clocking in at 6:50.6 and Stanford at 6:37.6.

In the final race of the weekend for the Green and White, MSU’s varsity four rowed strong, but ultimately came in second just behind the Cardinals with a time of 7:39.7. Stanford earned a time of 7:23.9 in that race.

“The varsity four improved from yesterday but we were still off of our top-end speed we’ve seen in previous races, and the results showed that today,” said assistant coach Samantha Sarff. “The speed is there, so the consistency will be the focal point this week so we can continue to progress toward our Big Ten goal splits.”

The Spartans will resume racing next weekend as they head to Ann Arbor to compete in aBig Ten double dual against Iowa and Indiana at Michigan.
