Ithaca, NY - Michigan State, ranked seventh in this week's CRCA/US Rowing poll, wrapped up two days of racing in central New York on Saturday, lining up with four different crews in three races.
The Spartans raced Gonzaga and Buffalo on Friday afternoon, with strong results across the board and wins in each of the six boats against Buffalo and Gonzaga. The Spartans won five of the six races by open water, the closest margin coming in the varsity four, where Michigan State won by a length (7:24.3-7:29.5) over Buffalo.
On Saturday, the Spartans first lined up with top-ranked Yale, then took on host Cornell later in the afternoon. The Spartans went toe-to-toe with the Elis, but Yale pulled out victories in both the varsity eight second varsity eight by 2.3 seconds (approx. half a length).
In the varsity eight race, Yale got off well and had a comfortable lead at the midway point. The Spartans made a push over the second 1,000 meters, but the Bulldogs held them off, finishing in 6:16.3. In the second varisty eight race, Yale led by five seconds with 750m left but the Spartans rallied to close the gap to 2.3 secons at the finish. The varsity four fell to the Bulldogs by 3.1 seconds, but the second four earned MSU's one victory over the Elis on the day with a 11-second margin.
Later in the afternoon, the Spartans lined up with host Cornell. MSU dominated the Big Red, the smallest margin coming in the second varsity race, where the Spartans won by a length. The remainder of MSU's boats posted open-water victories.
