Spartans sweep Iowa, Louisville

East Lansing, Mich. - Michigan State rowing completed a near-sweep of Louisville and Iowa in a double-dual today at Iowa, downing the host Hawkeyes 45-22 in the afternoon session after a commanding 44-22 victory in the morning session against Louisville.
The Spartans, who fell in their opening races to Michigan and Ohio State last week, made great strides over the course of the week and won 10 of 11 races on the day in the sweep. MSU's varsity eight had margins of four seconds over Louisville, and posted an open-water victory (by 14 seconds) over the Hawkeyes in the afternoon session.
MSU's second varsity posted a pair of open-water victories, as did the varsity four. The second varsity four had a margin of nearly 20 seconds over the Cardinals in the morning session, and a convincing 19-second advantage against Iowa. The Spartan novices races to a 27-second win over Louisville, then had a lead of a length over Iowa in the second dual. MSU raced a second novice eight against both Iowa and Michigan in the afternoon session, with Iowa taking that race in a time of 7:50.2; MSU was second in 8:08.4, and Michigan was third in a time of 8:13.8.
The Spartans head to the east coast next weekend, racing Clemson, Northeastern and Penn along with host Virginia, the top-seeded crew in the country, next Saturday.
