EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State's varsity crew 8 boat defeated Ohio State and Iowa in its first encounter of the spring season with Big Ten opponents Saturday morning in Columbus, Ohio.

The Spartans also won the second varsity 4 race, while taking second in the junior varsity 8, the varsity 4 and the second novice 8. The first novice 8 boat finished third.

The varsity 8 race on Griggs Reservoir had to be restarted after a collision between the Ohio State and Michigan State boats at the start. After the restart, the Spartans built an early lead and maintained it through the race. Ohio State made a late charge, but Michigan State won by nearly six seconds.

The Spartans return to action next Saturday and Sunday at the SIRA Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
