Spartans Complete Day One at UVA Invite
April 14, 2012
East Lansing, Mich. - Michigan State had some mixed results in the first day of competition in the UVA invitational on Saturday, falling to host (and the No. 1 ranked team in the country) Virginia, but rebounded nicely with team victories over Penn and Big Ten foe Minnesota in the afternoon races.
"I thought that we had an opportunity today to see some good crews, and that will continue tomorrow," said head coach Matt Weise. "I think that all in all, we raced well and made some big strides forward. These out-of-region races are very important for us when it comes time for NCAA selections, so our races today and tomorrow will be looked at down the road. We'll turn our attention to Sunday's races against Clemson and Northeastern "
In the first session, the most exciting race of the day came in the second varsity eight, as the Cavaliers and the Spartans battled over the second 1000, with MSU moving on their hosts at the 1500 meter mark. UVA responded, pulling four seats ahead of the Spartans and finishing with a margin of less than a second ahead of MSU. The top-ranked Cavaliers pulled out open-water wins in the other races.
In the afternoon session, MSU won the two varsity eight and the second varsity four races, including an open-water win in the varsity boat as well as the 2V4. MSU had a half-length lead over Minnesota at the finish of the second varsity race. MSU's novice eight was a length behind Minnesota, and the varsity four race saw the Spartans and Penn three-quarters of a length behind the Gophers, and Penn edging MSU by a half-second at the finish.
On Saturday, the race schedule has been amended due to windy conditions, with MSU racing starting at 8:10 am with the varsity eight.
