East Lansing, Mich. - - Michigan State completed the first two sessions of the Clemson Invitational on Saturday, and heads into Sunday racing with some promising performances under its belt.

Lining up with seven top-20 teams, the Spartans got heat victories from their novice boat as well as their first and second varsity fours. Each boat raced once in each session, and lined up against different crews in the two sessions.

"After struggling in the morning, we made some adjustments in some boats in the afternoon and did much better," said head coach Matt Weise. "The novice boats certainly did a great job today, racing well both times. The second varsity four also had good results.

"The varsity four and two varsity eight boats struggled in the morning, but all three boats responded well in the afternoon and raced well," continued the head coach. "They were much too conservative in the morning and did a much better job of attacking the race course in the afternoon. I'm hoping that we can use this afternoon's performances to springboard into better results Sunday morning."

The varsity eight rebounded with a strong afternoon race after finishing seventh in its heat in the morning session. The Spartans crossed the line in a time of 6:48.3 in the morning, a race Cornell won in a time of 6:35.0. MSU finished third in its second race of the day, crossing the line in 6:29.9, behind Louisville (6:22.0) and Minnesota (6:26.3). The second eight finished fourth in its morning heat, (6:50.2), as Cornell posted the second-best time of the morning session and won MSUs heat in a time of 6:40.8. In the afternoon, the second eight was fifth, just five-tenths of a second behind Indiana in a time of 6:41.7.

The fours posted some strong results on the day as well. The varsity four was fifth in its morning race (7:39.2) behind winner Penn (7:34.0), and rebounded to post a race victory in the afternoon session in a time of 7:21.2, the sixth-fastest time overall from the three heats. The second four won both of its races on the day, first defeating Tennessee, Cornell, Duke and Penn in the morning session in a time o f 7:49.9. In the afternoon, racing was consistently much faster for all boats, and MSU posted the second-fastest time in the two races overall by winning the second heat in a time of 7:22.3.

MSU's two novice entries each turned in a pair of strong performances on the day as well, as the novice eight won both of their races in the two sessions and the second novice eight finished second in both. For the first novice entry, the boat finished with the sixth-fastest time of the day and won its heat in a time of 7:04.06; its winning time in the afternoon session, also a race win, was 6:53.3. The second novice boat finished second to Texas in each race, but ahead of Ohio State, Clemson, and Duke.

The Spartans are back in action on Sunday morning to close out racing against the incredibly competitive field.
