Crew Wins Three Races Against Michigan, Kansas State
May 3, 1998 EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State crew's varsity 8 boat, which lost to Michigan by more than eight seconds at last weekend's Midwest Sprints, closed that gap to less than four seconds this morning in racing at Belleville Lake in Belleville, Mich.
The Spartans raced against Michigan in the morning and Kansas State in the afternoon. Ohio State and Western Ontario also had entries in some races.
"I was really pleased with the day overall," head coach Bebe Bryans. iWe didn't win a lot of races, but we raced well. I was really pleased with the freshmen, and the varsity 8 and varsity 4 have set us up well for an NCAA bid."
The varsity 8 boat was within a boatlength of Michigan for the entire race.
"They outstarted us and outsprinted us," Bryans said. "but we were solid in the bosy. We closed the gap and we know what we need to work on."
The varsity 4 posted a victory over Kansas State by approximately eight seconds, defeating the boat which won at Midwest Sprints last weekend.
Michigan State's first novice 8 won both of its races on the day, defeating Michigan by 5.2 seconds and Kansas State by 4.1 seconds.
The Spartans return to action Saturday, May 16, at the Central Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn. #
